On behalf of everyone at Sport BC, I hope all of you have had wonderful summers and are enjoying the fall as routines set in.
At this time in our province, British Columbians are turning their attention to the upcoming provincial election. Important conversations are being had about key issues affecting people throughout the province, but the value of sport has been missing from those conversations.
On October 19th, we want British Columbians to have the opportunity to cast our vote in support of sport. Sport is a cornerstone for health, connection, and community. Its benefits extend beyond individual health and wellness, and it’s so much more than “just a game.”
We need sport to be a priority on each candidate’s platform, and for the parties and candidates who will form the next provincial government to share our commitment to sport. We are asking for BC’s next government to commit to closing the gap in core funding for sport. We are also asking for a commitment to a new investment of $500M over 5 years to build new facilities and increase accessibility to sport.
There hasn’t been an increase to core funding for amateur sport in BC since 2010. Our sector needs increased resources to improve our infrastructure and the quality of amateur sport experiences throughout the province. We all have so much to gain from this.
Here is how you can join the campaign
Sport BC, through its regular member meetings and the efforts of its Advocacy Working Group, has been concentrating efforts to ensure sport and the resources needed to deliver sport are understood by the broader community. We know BC’s success is rooted in everyone having opportunities and places to experience safe inclusive sport. We want to lift up the discussion around sport and how it benefits all our communities.
To get people talking about the value of sport, we have created a toolkit, which includes social posts, letters, and additional campaign resources. To access the toolkit, click here.
We are excited to launch our campaign and invite you to join in support of sport and BC’s future! Be a sport champion and use the tools developed and start the discussion with candidates, neighbours, and your friends about the important role sport plays in your life.
We all believe that sport is a connector and community builder. Since 1966, Sport BC’s strength lies in the collaborative efforts of our membership on behalf of the sector. Together we are enhancing and supporting sport participation in British Columbia.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or require more information on any of our initiatives.
Yours in Sport,
Rob
