BC Sport Participation Program

Ideas and Actions from Successful Projects
The BC Sport Participation Program (BCSPP) workshop is a half-day interactive session to discuss the successes and challenges, and share knowledge of practices from successful projects in the 2010 -11 BCSPP program.

In drawing to close the 7th year of this program, since 2004 the BCSPP program has provided sport opportunities for more than 300,000 new participants and trained over 11,500 coaches and leaders in over 115 communities province-wide creating new opportunities for children and youth, people with disabilities, seniors, aboriginal youth, and girls and women.

Sport Canada and the Province of BC, through 2010 Legacies Now, supported the BCSPP program equally and funded recipients in multi-year phases, from 2004 to 2007, from 2007 to 2010, and again in 2010-11 (a special one-year extension for funding of select programs).  2010 Legacies Now is hopeful that the program will be renewed for 2012 and will be sharing what information is known at the time.

2010 Legacies Now extends this invitation to join us in sharing successes, challenges and practices in the BC Sport Participation Program.

Addressing Homophobia in Sport: Leading the Way for your Organization
February 3, 2011
9am –12:30pm
FIRSTAR Sport Centre

Building on the Canadian Association for Advancement of Women and Sport’ (CAAWS) discussion paper “Seeing the Invisible, Speaking about the Unspoken; Addressing Homophobia in Sport”, this 3.5 hour interactive session provides coaches and other sport leaders with the opportunity to really understand what is homophobia, how it can hurt your organization’s athletes, coaches, officials and other participants, regardless of their sexual orientation. From understanding lesbian, gay, bisexual, and two-spirited (LGBT) language to dealing with sensitive issues such as same-sex relationships amongst teammates, the session allows for an open and honest conversation about homophobia and the important role coaches and other sport leaders can play in making sport more accepting of sexual diversity.

The workshop will be delivered by Jennifer Birch-Jones, the Program Lead for CAAWS’ Addressing Homophobia in Sport, who has extensive experience in many facets of sport, from the grass roots to international.

There is no cost to attend the workshop but all participants are asked to please register in advance at workshops@sportbc.com or 604-333-3413 by Friday, January 28, 2011. Space is limited to 20 participants.
