Power of Sport Tour® fosters growth of sport

Sport BC tour promotes sport development
and healthy living in Kamloops, BC

For Immediate Release:
Friday, November 21, 2008

Richmond, B.C.: The successful Power of Sport Tour® will wrap up this Saturday, in Kamloops, BC after nine intensive days of clinics, lessons, workshops, and community events.

The Power of Sport Tour® was initiated by Sport BC in the fall of 2000 to help the BC provincial sport organizations deliver high-level regional sport development programs in communities throughout British Columbia. The Power of Sport Tour® sees specialists from across the province deliver workshops, seminars, presentations and demonstrations aimed to promote, teach and encourage involvement in amateur sport at the local and regional level.

Resources and dozens of experts representing 15 provincial sport organizations gathered in Kamloops this week to promote sport and physical activity. Throughout the week the Power of Sport Tour® delivered 190 courses, workshops, and demonstrations aimed at coaches, volunteers, students, athletes and potential athletes.

“This has been the most successful Power of Sport Tour® since its inception in 2000,” commented Paul Varian, Sport BC President and CEO. “We had a record number of participants in both the community and school programs. This clearly demonstrates the citizens of Kamloops are keen to get involved in the broader participation in sport.”

The highest participating component of the Power of Sport Tour® is targeted to elementary and secondary school aged children. Throughout School District No. 73, 186 introductory lessons were taught to more than 3,900 students at 20 participating schools. Students participated in hands-on activities in sports including action schools! (student leadership), athletics (RunJumpThrow), badminton, curling, gymnastics, lacrosse, orienteering, ringette, rowing, soccer, speed skating, SportAbility, SportFit, table tennis and triathlon.

As the students participated in the lessons and demonstrations, educators were provided with instruction on how to easily incorporate these sports into their existing curriculums.

This is the second time the Power of Sport Tour® has been to Kamloops. Kamloops was the host of the first Power of Sport Tour® in October 2000.
