Prince Rupert Sport Heroes Announced

Eight sport volunteers to receive Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Encana

Richmond, BC – Sport BC will honour eight dedicated sport leaders from the City of Prince Rupert on Thursday, June 2, 2011 with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Encana.

The public award ceremony, hosted at the Coast Prince Rupert Hotel, celebrates the contributions of a long-time community of sport volunteers. Mayor Jack Mussallem will be in attendance to present the winners with their awards and a gift from the Community Sport Heroes Awards’ official apparel provider, FIRSTAR Sports Inc.

“The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Tim Gayda, President and CEO of Sport BC. “Sport is crucial to the development of strong, healthy communities, and community volunteers, like the eight scheduled to be honoured, are essential to that success.”

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2011 Sport BC Community Sport Hero Awards in Prince Rupert:

  • John Mullin, Curling
  • Mel Bishop, Basketball
  • Troy O’Toole, Hockey
  • Karen Myers, Special Olympics
  • Fred Beil, Soccer
  • Don Seidel, Swimming
  • Gene Storey, Hockey
  • Christine Storey, Hockey

The public is invited to help celebrate these individuals at the ceremony, beginning at 6:00 pm. Prince Rupert is the sixth stop for the Community Sport Hero Awards in 2011.

The Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Encana honour outstanding sport volunteers in communities across British Columbia. The awards recognize coaches, officials, mentors and administrators who have dedicated themselves to grow and develop amateur sport at the community level. The dedication of these individuals has allowed athletes and communities to grow and shape sport in British Columbia and inspire others to become involved in sport.
