Richmond, BC – Sport BC announced Thursday the appointment of Tim Gayda as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective September 6, 2010. Gayda replaces Paul Varian as the fifth CEO in Sport BC’s 44-year history.

“Tim brings over 16 years of world-class experience to BC’s amateur sport sector, having contributed both his exceptional leadership skills and his obvious passion for sport to the success of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said John Alexander, Chair of Sport BC’s Board of Directors. “Thanks to the efforts of our search committee, I am confident we have found the right person to lead sport in BC in this post-Games climate.”

No stranger to BC sport, Gayda most recently held the position of Vice-President, Sport with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC), where he led the delivery of all sport competitions for the Games, managing a sport workforce of over 4,000. Prior to his VANOC post, Gayda was Director of Sport & Operations Planning for the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation and has also served as event manager for The Vancouver Sun Run and the FIS Freestyle World Cup and World Ski Championships.

“Joining Sport BC as President and CEO presents an exciting new challenge to build on the legacy of the Games,” said Gayda. “British Columbians have demonstrated their capacity for embracing sport and I’m ready to help ensure they have a strong sector within which to participate.”

Gayda will be responsible for the overall leadership and strategic development of Sport BC while also providing support to the voting member organizations. He will spearhead government and stakeholder relations to enhance Sport BC’s vision and mandate and ensure Sport BC is a significant voice for sport in British Columbia.

A skier and mountain biker in his spare time, Gayda is also a champion for amateur sport in his personal life, volunteering for his children’s sport teams.
