Smithers sport heroes announced

Eight dedicated sport volunteers to receive Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards presented by EnCana

Richmond, BC – Sport BC will honour eight dedicated sport leaders from Smithers on Tuesday July 20, 2010 with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by EnCana.

The award ceremony, hosted at the Hudson Bay Lodge, celebrates the contributions of longtime community sport volunteers. Cress Farrow, Mayor of the Town of Smithers will be in attendance to present the winners with their awards and a gift from the Community Sport Hero Awards’ official apparel provider, FIRSTAR Sports Inc.

 “The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Rick Christiaanse, Executive Vice-President of Sport BC. “Community volunteers, like the eight scheduled to be honoured on July 20, are crucial to the success of sport in BC and the development of strong, healthy communities.” 

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2010 Sport BC Community Sport Hero Awards in Smithers: 

  • Shelly Alessio, Soccer
  • Kala Hooker, Rugby
  • Stuart Van Horn, Multi-Sports
  • Bill Hodyk, Soccer
  • Brian Irvine, Soccer
  • Gord Judzentis, Curling
  • Mike Richey, Wrestling
  • Holly Smith, Action Schools! BC

 The public is invited to help celebrate these individuals at the ceremony, which begins at 6:00pm. Smithers is the sixth stop for the Community Sport Hero Awards in 2010, heading next to Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd in August.
