Richmond, BC- Sport BC’s Power of Sport Tour wrapped up Sunday, April 25, 2010 in the Township of Langley, BC after nine days of clinics, lessons, workshops, and events aimed at increasing sport participation and infrastructure within the community.
Experts from 11 Provincial Sport Organizations delivered 86 community and school programs to more than 2000 community members over the course of the Tour.
“With the BC Summer Games less than 100 days away, people of all ages and skill levels are ready to become active in sport in the Township of Langley,” commented Rick Christiaanse, Executive Vice-President of Sport BC. “From the rookie to the Level 3 certified official, Sport BC’s Power of Sport Tour presents opportunities for everyone to get involved.”
The most popular events during any Power of Sport Tour are the school programs, targeted to elementary and secondary school aged children. Throughout the Langley School District, 79 introductory lessons were taught to students at 12 participating schools. Students participated in hands-on activities led by sport organizations such as Action! Schools BC, ProMOTION Plus, BC Amateur Athletics Association, BC Disc Sports Society, BC Golf Association, BC Ringette Association, Curl BC, Softball BC, BC Lacrosse Association, Orienteering Association of BC, BC Table Tennis Association, and CanoeKayak BC. At the same time, educators were provided with instruction on how to easily incorporate these sports into their existing curricula to create a sustainable legacy of sport in participating schools.
BC Amateur Athletics Association, BC Golf Association and CanoeKayak BC also participated in the tour by facilitating coach and official certification programming for the community-at-large, while ProMOTION Plus held a leadership workshop for young women.
The Power of Sport Tour was initiated by Sport BC in the fall of 2000 to help BC’s Provincial Sport Organizations deliver high-level regional sport development programs in communities throughout British Columbia. For more information, visit www.powerofsporttour.ca.
