Richmond, BC – Sport BC is proud to announce KC Emerson, a long-time member of BC’s sport community, as the recipient of this year’s Daryl Thompson award. The award, handed out at the 44th Annual Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards presented by TELUS, recognizes a British Columbian who has contributed to sport in an extraordinary way over an extended period of time.

A former Vice President of Triathlon BC, Emerson has dedicated close to twenty years of her life to the development of triathlon and duathlon sports both at the provincial and national levels.

After stepping onto the competitive scene in 1991 as an athlete, Emerson quickly established herself as one of the top triathletes in the country, and in 1997 was awarded the age group Athlete of the Year Award by Triathlon Canada. However, after her appearance at the 1994 and 1997 ITU World Championships, Emerson elected to switch directions and begin her lucrative coaching career.

Since then, she has successfully coached and managed several provincial and national teams, has served as Chair on numerous committees and has remained committed to the development of sport through her role as advisor for the BC Summer Games.

“As an athlete, and then as a coach and volunteer, KC’s passion and commitment to sport have directly contributed to the growth and development of many triathletes, duathletes and coaches across Canada” said Rick Christiaanse, Executive Vice-President of Sport BC. “We are proud to present her with this award and look forward to celebrating her ongoing dedication on March 31.”

“I am extremely honoured and humbled to be recognized in this way by my peers in the sport system,” said Emerson. “One never achieves these things on their own – I owe much to the many who have supported and motivated me over the years!”

The Daryl Thompson Award is named in honour of the late former Sport BC Chair, Daryl Thompson, and the recipient is selected by Sport BC’s Board of Directors. Previous award winners include John Furlong, Rick Hansen, and Terry Fox.
