Sport heroes recognized in 100 Mile House

Eight dedicated sport volunteers receive Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards presented by EnCana

Richmond, BC – Sport BC was pleased to honour eight dedicated sport leaders from 100 Mile House on Tuesday, with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by EnCana.

“The Community Sport Hero Awards celebrate volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Sport BC’s Executive Vice-President, Rick Christiaanse. “These awards recognize their dedication to building and growing sport at the community level and helping athletes, often behind the scenes, pursue the sport they love.”

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2010 Sport BC Community Sport Hero® Awards in 100 Mile House:

  • Barb MacLeod, Action Schools! BC
  • Bev and Jeff Kendy, BC Games Society
  • Rick Takagi, Hockey
  • Jack Jenkins, Rowing
  • John McCormack, Rugby
  • Werner Heine, Soccer
  • Peter Leslie, Wrestling

An awards ceremony was hosted at the Lodge Valley Room on Tuesday, March 16, 2010. The award recipients were also honoured with a special presentation by Mayor Mitch Campsall. This marks the first time Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards have visited 100 Mile House. They will land next in the Township of Langley on Tuesday, April 21.

Sport makes up the largest part of Canada’s voluntary sector by virtue of some 34,000 organizations and 5.3 million volunteers. Community volunteers, like these Community Sport Heroes, are crucial to the success of sport in BC and the development of strong, healthy communities.
