Sport heroes recognized in Port Alberni

Seven dedicated sport volunteers receive Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero® Awards presented by EnCana

Richmond, BC - Sport BC was pleased to honour and recognize seven dedicated sport leaders from Port Alberni on Tuesday, with the Community Sport Hero® Awards presented by EnCana.

“The Community Sport Hero® Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Sport BC’s President and CEO, Paul Varian. “These awards represent their dedication to building and growing sport at the community level. It is also an opportunity to celebrate those who have helped athletes, often behind the scenes, to pursue the sport they love.”

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2009 Sport BC Community Sport Hero® Awards in Port Alberni:

  • Sukwinder Manhas, Martial Arts
  • James Messenger, Wrestling
  • Theresa Kingston, BC Games Society
  • Dewayne Parfitt, BC Games Society
  • Edna McCreight, Special Olympics
  • Anne Evans, Special Olympics
  • Fred Zibin, Softball

An awards ceremony was hosted at the Black Sheep Rugby Club on Tuesday, December 8, 2009. The award recipients were honoured with special presentations by Mayor Ken McRae, and Spirit of BC Committee Chair, Dan Washington.

Sport makes up the largest part of Canada’s voluntary sector by virtue of some 34,000 organizations and 5.3 million volunteers. Community volunteers, like these Community Sport Heroes, are crucial to the success of sport in BC and the development of strong, healthy communities.
