PROVINCE PROCLAIMS ASHLEIGH MCIVOR DAY
VICTORIA – The provincial government has proclaimed Feb. 23, 2011 as “Ashleigh McIvor Day” as part of a program to recognize British Columbia’s medal-winning athletes from the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, announced Deputy Premier Colin Hansen today.
“Ashleigh is a great role model for young British Columbians aspiring to become athletes,” said Hansen. “In addition to her Olympic title she has found success on the international circuit and the Winter X Games and is also a member of the ActNow BC Athlete Ambassador team encouraging the benefits of healthy living and healthy eating to youth.” McIvor won the Olympic Gold Medal in Women’s Ski Cross on Feb. 23, 2010, becoming the first-ever Olympic champion in the sport.
“Ashleigh brought an entire nation to its collective feet when she won her Gold medal last year,” said the Honourable Steven L. Point, Lieutenant Governor of B.C. “This proclamation honours her Olympic achievement and acknowledges her role as a representative for Canada and British Columbia every time she competes abroad.”
