Marino reaches a career high in her first career WTA final

After reaching her first career WTA final at the Cellular South Cup, Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino had to withdraw due to the pain and strain of an abdominal injury. “I usually pride myself on being a tough cookie and persevering through pain and injuries. But it got to a point where I could no longer play due to the amount of pain,” Rebecca mentions in her Blog. She suffered the left abdominal strain during her semi-final win over Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina and decided to play through it in the finals. The injury became obvious when Rebecca dropped the first set of her final match (6-2) to Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova.

Despite her injury, Rebecca remained optimistic and grateful for the support she received during the tournament. She currently holds the No. 60 spot on the WTA rankings, her highest position ever. With her new world ranking, Rebecca is Canada’s highest-ranked women’s singles player.
