Cameron Levins wins the Canadian Cross Country Running Championship
Comox Valley’s Cameron Levins raced to a first-place finish at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on November 27 in Guelph ON.
Levins finished the 10k race more than 24 seconds ahead of second-place Robin Watson, crossing the line in 29:25.7. Watson (29:49.0) and third-place Reid Coolsaet (30:04.7) are both considered among the top marathon runners in Canada, as Levins also finished well ahead of former NCAA All-American Kip Kangogo (30:22.7) and the 2010 NCAA steeplechase champion during the outdoor season, Matthew Hughes (31:10.7) of the University of Louisville.
Levins, who attends Southern Utah University, and ran a sub-4 minute mile indoors last winter, had to brave sub-freezing temperatures and a snowy course for the victory. He now hopes to represent Canada at the World Cross Country Championships in Spain next March.
In the Junior Men’s 8k championship, Luc Bruchet of Surrey picked up the silver medal in 24:37.1. And in the Senior Women’s 7k championship, Natasha Wodak of Port Moody was BC’s top finisher, placing fifth in 24:27.2.
