Government of Canada Maintains its Support for Canadian Interuniversity Sport
The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada’s 2010-2011 contribution to Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS). This funding will enable CIS to effectively deliver its national championships for the year.
“Our support will help CIS maintain its commitment to more than 600 coaches and 10,000 student-athletes from 51 universities that compete in university sports across Canada every year,” said Minister of State Lunn. “University sports have a rich history in Canada, and we are happy to help maintain that legacy.”
“CIS is extremely grateful to the Government of Canada for its generous support of student-athletes and Canadian universities,” said Marg McGregor, Chief Executive Officer of CIS. “This support, coupled with the significant investment that universities make to coaching salaries, facility infrastructure, and programming, makes the Canadian sport system stronger.”
The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. Funding of up to $402,900 to CIS for 2010-2011 will help support a variety of projects, including travel costs for student-athletes, coaches, event management personnel, and officials participating in the following national championships:

– 2010 CIS Women’s Rugby Championship
– 2010 CIS Men’s Soccer Championship
– 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Championship
– 2010 Football Semi-Final (Mitchell Bowl)
– 2010 Football Semi-Final (Uteck Bowl)
– 2010 CIS Football (Vanier Cup) Championship
– 2011 CIS Swimming Championships
– 2011 CIS Wrestling Championships
– 2011 CIS Women’s Volleyball Championship
– 2011 CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship
– 2011 CIS Curling Championships
– 2011 CIS Track and Field Championships
– 2011 CIS Women’s Ice Hockey Championship
– 2011 CIS Men’s Ice Hockey Championship
– 2011 CIS Men’s Basketball Championship
