BC responsible for 19 of Canada’s 73 medals at 2010 Commonwealth Games
Athletes from all over BC have been golden in Delhi as the Commonwealth Games hit the homestretch. Premier Gordon Campbell released the following statement, congratulating our provine’s competitors on their performances thus far:
“On behalf of all British Columbians, congratulations to our athletes, who continue to shine at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
“We are all proud of Christine Girard of White Rock, who broke the Games record to win gold in the 69 kg weightlifting event, and Sultana Frizell of Kamloops, who collected gold and set a Games record in the hammer throw.
“British Columbians continued to shine in the Athletics competitions.
Diane Cummins of Victoria, an alumnus of the 1997 Canada Summer Games, won bronze in the 800-metre event, and Carly Dockendorf of Port Moody won bronze in pole vault.
“Congratulations to Dorothy Ludwig of Langley, who collected bronze in the women’s pairs 10 metre air pistol shooting event, and to Demetra Mantcheva of Richmond, whose rhythmic gymnastics team won silver. Zach Bell of Vancouver rode to a bronze medal finish in men’s track cycling 20 metre scratch final, and Arjan Bhullar of Richmond won gold in the 120 kg freestyle men’s wrestling event.
“B.C. athletes continue to find medals in the swimming pool at these Commonwealth Games. Brent Hayden of Vancouver and Ryan Cochrane of Victoria both won their second gold medals of the Games – Brent in the 50 metre freestyle and Ryan in the 1,500 metre freestyle, while Julia Wilkinson added her third bronze medal of the Games in the women’s 4×100 medley relay. Vancouver’s Annamay Pierse won bronze in the same event.
“Canadians have won 73 medals so far at the Commonwealth Games, and British Columbians are responsible for 19 of them. Our talented athletes continue to show the world the results of their hard work, and we are proud to cheer them on.”
