Premier congratulates athletes on medals
VICTORIA – Premier Gordon Campbell issued the following statement today in honour of Canada’s increasing medal count at the Commonwealth Games:
“On behalf of all British Columbians, congratulations to Brent Hayden on his gold medal performance in the men’s 100 metre freestyle event at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. He is a strong competitor and we’ve watched him excel from early in his career at the 1998 BC Games and the 2001 Canada Summer Games to the elite athlete he is today.
”British Columbians join all the residents of Hazelton in celebrating Carol Huynh’s gold medal in the women’s 48-kg freestyle wrestling event today. She continues her golden performances, after winning gold in ladies’ wrestling at the 2008 Summer Olympics.
“Dylan Armstrong’s gold medal in the shot put event was Canada’s first gold in this event in 28 years, and all British Columbians join his hometown of Kamloops in cheering his excellence.”
”Jason Scott of Richmond and Robert Watson of Port Coquitlam are part of the Canadian Artistic Gymnastics team, and helped the team – the youngest in the competition – win bronze at the Games. This team has a great future in international competition.”
”The day after Victoria’s Julia Wilkinson won bronze in the ladies 200m Individual Medley, she returned to the pool to take bronze in the 100m backstroke. Congratulations to Julia on her great performances.”
“British Columbians can be proud that B.C. athletes have captured eight of Canada’s 24 medals so far at the Commonwealth Games.”
