Organize a Canada Games Day and Support Sports Day in Canada

(08/17/2011) Ottawa – The Canada Games Council (CGC), in support of Sports Day in Canada on September 17, invites all students, schools and community centres from across the country to Catch the Spirit of the Canada Games by organizing a Canada Games Day.

Canada Games Days is an event that offers children of all ages a sport and educational experience that mirrors the excitement and spirit of the Canada Games; Canada’s largest multi-sport event which is held every two years, alternating between summer and winter.

Throughout the week of September 12-17, 2011 leading up to Sports Day in Canada, help get kids physically active and participating in sport by organizing a Canada Games Day in your area.

“A Canada Games Day is a fun way to get kids involved in physical activity,” says Canada Games Council Chair Tom Quinn. “These events not only promote success and inclusion for all participants, but help uphold all the benefits that are essential to healthy childhood development.”

Canada Games Days’ events are part of the CGC’s Dreams and Champions programs and reinforce the CGC’s commitment of encouraging all young Canadians to make physical activity and fitness a key part of their daily lifestyle, and promote the development of young athletes and provide the tools and support programs for them to reach and succeed at the highest levels.

About the Canada Games

February 1967, in Québec City, the dream was finally realized. For the first time in Canada’s history, 1,800 athletes from 10 provinces and two territories gathered to compete in 15 sports. Under the Games motto ‘Unity through Sport’, these first Canada Winter Games paved the way to what is now Canada’s largest multi-sport competition for young athletes.

Held every two years, alternating between summer and winter, the Canada Games are a key event in the development of Canada’s young athletes. As the best in their age group, these young competitors come to the Games having trained long and hard to be among those chosen to represent their respective province or territory and compete for the Canada Games Flag and Centennial Cup. With the Canada Games poised as a key step in the development of Canada’s future stars, Canada Games athletes are Canada’s next generation national, international and Olympic champions.

Held once every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games represent the highest level of national competition for up and coming Canadian athletes. The Games have been hosted in every province at least once since their inception in Quebec City during Canada’s Centennial in 1967. The Games are proud of their contribution to Canada’s sport development system in addition to their lasting legacy of sport facilities, community pride, volunteerism and national unity.

The organization of the Canada Games is made possible thanks to the contribution and support of the Government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, the Host Societies, host municipalities and the Canada Games Council.
