Sport BC to Recognize Sport Heroes in Gibsons, Sunshine Coast

Sport BC now accepting nominations for the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Teck

RICHMOND, BC (April 20, 2012) – Sport BC is bringing the Community Sport Hero Awards, presented by Teck, to the Town of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast on June 13, 2012. The awards will honour long-standing community volunteers who have made significant contributions to sport. Nominations are now being accepted through sportbc.com until Friday, May 18, 2012.

“Volunteers are what fuel the development and sustainability of community sport within British Columbia,” said Sport BC’s Event Manager, Carey Summerfelt. “These awards are a rare and meaningful opportunity to acknowledge individuals who have made a significant and continued contribution to sport within their community.”

To be eligible, nominees for the Community Sport Hero Awards must meet the following criteria:

• Be an individual from the local community who makes a voluntary contribution to sport through coaching, officiating, boards, administration, special events, etc;
• Be an individual (not an organization or foundation); and
• Has been, or continues to be, a dedicated sport volunteer for a minimum of eight years.

This ceremony marks the fifth stop of 2012 for the traveling awards show, presented this year by Teck. It will be the first visit to Gibsons for Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards since the program began in 2001.

Nelson Sport Heroes Announced

Ten sport volunteers to receive Sport BC’s Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Teck

RICHMOND, BC (April 4, 2012) – Sport BC will honour ten dedicated sport leaders from the City of Nelson on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 with the Community Sport Hero Awards presented by Teck.

The public award ceremony, hosted at the Prestige Lakeside Resort in Nelson, celebrates the contributions of long-time community sport volunteers. Mayor John Dooley will be in attendance to present the winners with their awards and a gift from the Community Sport Heroes Awards’ official apparel provider, FIRSTAR Sports Inc.

“The Community Sport Hero Awards are a celebration of volunteers who have contributed eight or more years to sport,” said Carey Summerfelt, Event Manager of Sport BC. “Sport is crucial to the development of strong, healthy communities, and community volunteers, like the ten scheduled to be honoured, are essential to that success.”

The following individuals are the outstanding volunteers who were selected by their peers to receive the 2012 Community Sport Hero Awards in Nelson:

The public is invited to help celebrate these individuals at the ceremony, beginning at 6:00pm but please RSVP to carey.summerfelt@sportbc.com by April 11. This is the second visit to Nelson since the program’s inception in 2001. Nelson is the third stop for the Community Sport Hero Awards in 2012.
